Northern Rail corridor (Hillview MRT- Rainbow Bridge- Kranji MRT)

In this adventure of "The Boring Island", we explore the northern route of the rail corridor from Hillview MRT Station to Kranji where the Rainbow Bridge is located. Word of advice for this route you may want to put on your hiking boots as we discovered the importance of that especially when it rained the day before your hike.

The beginning of the trail is a relatively easy concrete path as the old railway is undergoing construction and some detour is required. The construction is expected to be completed by 3rd Quarter of 2022.

Although construction is ongoing, along the stretch where Mindef is situated you can still enjoy the greenery.

Opposite to Mindef, you will find a great integration of both the old buildings and new development.

After you have passed Mindef main gate do keep a lookout for a small road branching away from Upper Bukit Timah Road near the intersection of Upper Bukit Timah and Bukit Panjang flyover. There is also a seafood restaurant and a Hindu temple nearby.

Just before Junction 10, you may find the signage regarding the 400m rail corridor test track where you can experience four possible types of surface materials, eg Fine Gravel, Porous Concrete, Glow-in the dark, Grass and Gravel. If anyone, do walk this test track at night do let us know if the path really glows in the dark!

Pushing on from Junction 10, it is a stretch of a mixture between grass and gravel path. You will probably encounter a green tent underneath the two flyovers (probably temporary).

The green tent has an uncanny resemblance to a roadside durian stall in our neighboring country. This is even more so with the coconut trees standing by the horizon. Up for durians anyone?

For those who find serenity in green, this is definitely a path for you with the sky joining grassland

Further on to the path, we present to you the "rail corridor tree" The tree houses a great many of the bird nest ferns on the lower branches.

If you are lucky like us, taking the path after a heavy rain, you may find Singapore's very own 'Sky Mirror'.

We are not kidding when we say wear your hiking boots as some part of the track can get a bit of "ponding" and muddy.

You will pass by Pang Sua fishing deck, a very nice water body separating the HDB flats and the industrial area.

If your eyes are sharp enough, you discover some residents in the puddle of water and the grassland.

Enjoy the flora and fauna along the way.

Somehow this looks awfully familiar...somehow reminds me of something that starts with C and ends with 19 that got us stuck in this boring island.

Interestingly this trail will also cover the mangrove forest near the Kranji area

By now, we are famished and decided to detour to passing KF1 karting circuit and to Singapore turf club to get a quick bite first before heading on to the rainbow bridge.

The Rainbow bridge is located at the Kranji Lodge One, you enter via the carpark along Woodland Road. You will not be able to enter via the Kranji Road as public are not allowed to enter Kranji Lodge One itself.

Finally, we have reached the Rainbow bridge that spans across the Mandai River.
